Amazon is providing sellers with AI functionality for their listings.

Amazon is equipping third-party sellers with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools designed to streamline the creation and editing of product listings.

The e-tailer is releasing a new set of generative AI capabilities intended to simplify how third-party sellers on its platform create product descriptions, titles, and listing details. Generative AI is based on machine learning (ML) and can create new content and ideas, including conversations, stories, images, videos, and music.

These new features are designed to make it faster and easier for sellers to list new products as well as enrich existing listings. Leveraging generative AI, sellers can enter pieces of information like product titles, bullet points, and descriptions in one step.

The new capabilities use large language models (LLMs), a type of ML model specifically trained on large amounts of data that can recognize, summarize, translate, predict, and generate text and other content, to build more comprehensive product descriptions.

To get started, sellers can provide a brief description of the product in a few words or sentences, and Amazon will generate content for their review. Sellers can refine it if they want, or directly submit the automatically generated content to the Amazon catalog.

“With our new generative AI models, we can infer, improve, and enrich product knowledge at an unprecedented scale and with dramatic improvement in quality, performance, and efficiency,” Robert Tekiela, VP of Amazon selection and catalog systems, said in a corporate blog post. “Our models learn to infer product information through the diverse sources of information, latent knowledge, and logical reasoning that they learn. For example, they can infer a table is round if specifications list a diameter or infer the collar style of a shirt from its image.”

Sellers have tested these AI offerings throughout the past few months, and Amazon says early feedback indicates that the majority of those sellers are directly using the listing content the AI model creates for them. Starting to simplify listing creation using AI is just one way that Amazon is making it easier for sellers to launch and build a successful business. This is just the tip of the iceberg on how we plan to use AI to help improve the seller experience and help more sellers succeed.

E-commerce retailers apply generative AI to listings

Amazon is not the only online retailer looking to improve product listings or related content on its site with generative AI. For example, eBay is releasing a new seller tool that uses AI to analyze, research and extrapolate details about listings from a small amount of seller-provided data, including images.

And in addition to performing AI-based quality reviews on product listings, Newegg is utiliizng ChatGPTa generative AI model which interacts with users in a conversational style that mimics human interaction and uses ML to continually refine and improve its responses, to offer concise summaries of customer reviews on product pages. Amazon is also offering review summaries automatically produced with generative AI.

Amazon gets smarter

Amazon has already been leveraging advanced AI to support initiatives as varied as counterfeit detectioninventory handling, and tailoring video shopping content. In April 2023, the company launched a new generative AI model called Bedrock.

In July 2023, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic and Inflection pledged to follow a set of voluntary commitments proposed by the Biden administration to ensure what the White House termed the “three principles” guiding the future development of AI: safety, security, and trust.
