C-Suite Moves: November report

Here’s a look at the major C-suite appointments that occurred during the month of November (listed in the order they were announced).

•Claire’s Holdings appointed a 25-year retailing veteran to a dual C-suite position. The young women’s jewelry and accessories retailer named Chris Cramer as CFO and COO. He will oversee Claire’s finance, supply chain, technology and North American real estate teams.

•Big Lots named Kristen Cox as senior VP, chief stores officer. She joins Big Lots from Burlington Stores, where she spent nearly seven years, most recently as senior VP of human resources for all stores

•A veteran executive with 25 years of experience in entertainment, media and sports industries will head up marketing at Macy’s Inc.'s namesake banner. The department store giant appointed Sharon Otterman as chief marketing officer of Macy’s. Most recently, she served as chief marketing officer of Caesars Entertainment, where she launched Caesars Sportsbook.

• Pet Supermarket named Rich Tannenbaum, a retail veteran with 25  years of retail, e-commerce and consumer goods experience, as CEO. Most recently, from 2019 to 2023, he was senior VP of global supply chain at Five Below.

•  Dave Alves, COO of Kohl’s, exited the company after less than a year on the job.  Prior to Kohl’s, Alves spent 10 years at Bealls, including serving as president and chief retail officer, from January 2020 to February 2023.

Todd Jones, CEO of Publix since 2016, will step down from the post and become executive chairman, effective Jan. 1, 2024. He will be succeeded by current Publix president Kevin Murphy, a 40-year company veteran.

•Nike appointed Dr. Muge Erdirik Dogan as chief technology officer, effective Nov. 27. Dogan joins Nike from Amazon, where she most recently served as the president of Amazon Fashion, leading the business, technology, science, product and operations teams. She joined Amazon in 2007. In other key appointments, 30-year Nike veteran John Hoke was named chief innovation officer. And Nicole Hubbard Graham will become the company’s new chief marketing officer, effective Jan. 2. •Subway appointed Jeff Shepherd as CFO, succeeding Ben Wells who will retire at the end of the year after a 46-year career. Most recently, Shepherd served as executive VP and CFO of Advance Auto Parts.

Lee Bird, the longtime chairman and CEO of At Home, will step down at the end of 2023. Bird is departing from the value home goods retailer after 11 years with the company. The board has begun a search to find a new CEO.

•Donut chain Shipley Do-Nuts named Brad Reynolds as CFO. Reynolds is a restaurant industry veteran who has served as CFO of Blaze Pizza and Smashburger.

•Beyond (formerly Overstock.com) announced that longtime company veteran Jonathan Johnson has stepped down following “mutual agreement with the board” as CEO and board member. David Nielsen, president of Beyond, is taking on an expanded role as interim CEO while the company conducts an internal and external search for a permanent chief.

•Outdoor retailer and service provider Christy Sports tapped Pete LaBore as CEO. In other appointments, Mimi Nuelle was tapped as chief merchandising officer and Danielle Quatrochi was named chief marketing officer.

•Walgreens Boots Alliance tapped Neal Sample, a technology executive with health care experience, as executive VP and CIO. He succeeds Hsiao Wang, who departed Walgreens in early October, less than a year after he was hired.
