A major Canadian department store retailer is taking on some big names with its brand new online marketplace.

Hudson’s Bay is officially launching Marketplace, an online third-party sales platform, on its e-commerce site. Initially announced in February 2021, Marketplace is expected to bring more than 500 new sellers to thebay.com by the end of 2021.

The retailer will leverage Marketplace to introduce new and expanded category offerings including sports and recreation, tech, pets, health and wellness, and vintage designer handbags and watches. Hudson’s Bay is adding hundreds of new products at Marketplace’s March 22 launch, including specialty food items.

Hudson’s Bay is running Marketplace on the Mirakl platform. It is fully integrated with the retailer’s e-commerce and mobile commerce experience, including the ability to earn and redeem Hudson’s Bay reward points on all Marketplace items.

“As part of our digital-first strategy, the launch of Marketplace catapults Hudson’s Bay to the forefront of e-commerce in Canada,” said Iain Nairn, president and CEO of Hudson’s Bay. “We now have the ability to add millions of products to our offering, quickly adapting to customer demand. The response from the seller community has been extraordinarily positive as more and more brands seek to join this modern and convenient shopping experience.”

Founded in 1670 and headquartered in Brampton, Canada, Hudson’s Bay operates 88 stores across Canada.
