The Artisan, a Marriott Tribute brand, assumes a central location at the four million-sq.-ft. mixed use center north of Boston.

The 170-acre mixed-use development in Salem, N.H. that proved an instant hit drawing residents and shoppers from the cramped Boston market during the pandemic opens its first hotel this week.

Tuscan Village, which landed as No. 2 on Chain Store Age’s “Top 10 Retail Center Experiences” list this year, debuts The Artisan at Tuscan Village, a concept that is part of Marriott International’s Tribute Portfolio.

Marriott’s mission for its Tribute properties is that they serve as meeting spaces as well as dwelling spaces. The Artisan features the full-service Tuscan Kitchen restaurant, Caffe Artisan off the lobby, and a rooftop bar. The 165-room hotel also holds an indoor-outdoor fitness facility and a sundries market.

The Artisan’s arrival at Tuscan Village further cements the mixed-use center’s goal to serve as a bona fide community and not just a retail-based center. Last year it opened the 70,000-sq.-ft. Mass General Brigham medical center, a 23-hour facility that is the first in New Hampshire for the highly respected Boston-based hospital.

The hotel is located centrally in Tuscan Village, a pedestrian-centric property dotted with outdoor gathering spaces, firepits, walking trails, a Grand Lawn. A lake serves as its centerpiece.

The development’s Lake Park, Sam Adams Beer Garden, and Faro’s Tuscan Market—which has outdoor seating—draw summer crowds with a regular schedule of weekly events. Also attracting traffic are a new-to-market list of retail tenants that include Arhaus, Pottery Barn, L.L. Bean, Sleep Number, Container Store, Nike, Ulta Beauty Old Navy and a Market Basket supermarket.

Tuscan Village recently announced that Whole Foods, Athleta, Capital Grille and Tuscan Kitchen and Bar will be opening soon in its next phase.

“This super-regional gathering place has gained tremendous momentum. We see an ability to develop up to a total of almost four million sq. ft. of true mixed-use programming, and so much of it is not retail,” said Tuscan Village’s senior VP of leasing Mike Powers.

With nearly 100 hotels in nearly 30 countries and territories around the world, Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio seeks to connect with travelers who crave connections with the local communities they visit. Tribute’s lineup includes resorts like Ermita in Cartagena, urban hotels such as The Vagabond Club in Singapore, and independently tailored properties such as its Bellyard in Atlanta and Hotel Riomar in Ibiza.
