Kum & Go is expanding into several new markets.

Kum & Go has big growth plans for its 13th state of operations.

The Iowa-based, family-owned convenience store chain, which operates more than 400 stores across the Midwest and western parts of the country, has opened its first store in Michigan, in Walker. It is one of several Kum & Go locations set to open in the Grand Rapids area this year, with the second opening on January 26, in the town of Wyoming. Two locations in Grandville, Mich., are currently under construction, with both set to open in the next few months.

Kum & Go’s expansion in Michigan includes the Detroit market, which it will enter in 2024. The company’s future plans include the opening of more than 50 stores in the Michigan market during the next several years.

“We believe Kum & Go will be the lead convenience operator across the state as we continue our growth and expansion, stated Tanner Krause, CEO, Kum & Go, in a November release announcing the company’s planned expansion into Detroit. “Michigan is full of great people and great communities, and we know Kum & Go’s fresh perspective to convenience will create many opportunities there.”

The Grand Rapids opening is the second of Kum & Go’s recent new market ventures. The company opened its first location in the Salt Lake City area, in Draper, at the end of 2022. Additional stores in Utah are scheduled to open in the first half of this year, with locations in South Jordan, Murray and Herriman.

In addition, Kum & Go with be entering the Idaho market, with a set of stores in the Boise area set to open in 2023.

“Opening our first location in Grand Rapids is certainly a highlight to start off 2023,” said Krause. The more we’ve learned about Michigan, the more excited we are to invest here.”

Kum & Go’s stores feature an inviting open-concept design. The company recently launched a new, made-to-order menu across its footprint. Focused around ‘Real, Fresh, Fast Eats’, the menu features stackers, bowls, and grab-and-go burritos available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
