First Look: Malibu Barbie Café opens in NYC — awash in pink
Malibu Barbie has traded the West Coast for the Big Apple — at least for a while.
With the brand’s popularity trending before the release of the highly-anticipated “Barbie” movie this summer, Malibu Barbie Café has opened its doors in the Seaport district of New York City. The immersive, pink-hued 120-seat pop-up restaurant is a partnership between toy giant Mattel and travel planning and event platform Bucket List. It will be open until September 15.
Packed with photo opportunities, the two-story space is designed to transport visitors to 1970s Malibu California, with a sea of Barbie colors, laid-back beachy motifs, iconic pop tunes and retro glam. Customers can rest their feet in the sand, take photos inside a life-sized Barbie doll box and grab a surfboard. They can also shop exclusive Barbie merchandise.
The menu, created by Master Chef finalist Becky Brown, was created with all tastes and preferences in mind, and features an array of classis with a unique Barbie twist, according to Bucket List. It includes such items as strawberry, dreamsicle and cream soda floats that are served in a Barbie convertible.
Reservations are required, with ticket prices ranging from $22 to $30 for kids and $39 to $49 for adults, with the price depending on the time. Each reservation includes a choice of entree and side item, full access to the Barbie Cafe experience and a 90-minute table reservation. Customers can also buy additional drinks, dessert and food.
“We are delighted to open The Malibu Barbie Café, a truly unique dining experience that celebrates Barbie and all the brand represents,” Julie Freeland, senior director of location-based entertainment, Mattel, said in a press release. “At Mattel, we are always looking for exciting, new ways to bring the Barbie experience to life. From the beach-loving décor to the menu, every detail has been thoughtfully designed to celebrate the iconic Barbie style, with nostalgic details fans will love.”
