Target Corp. is pulling back the curtain on its 2023 new store openings and remodels for a glimpse of what’s to come as the retailer set an ambitious pace moving into 2024.

“From more stores to more deliveries, we’ve set an ambitious pace moving into 2024," the company said in a blog post, in which it offered up details about its “winning retail formula.”

Target opened 21 new stores across 10 states nationwide in 2023, with locations ranging from bustling urban hubs and sprawling suburbs to college campuses. Nearly half of the store openings were in California and New York. Four were in new markets for Target: Jamestown, N.Y.; Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; Quincy, Ill.; and Grass Valley, Calif. (The locations of the 21 new stores Target opened last year listed at end of article.)

Twelve of the stores featured Target’s larger format, which averages 125,000 square feet and boasts an open layout, expanded assortment and large backrooms to support the chain’s same-day fulfillment services. The retailer went even bigger in Prosper and New Caney, Tex., and Yonkers, N.Y., with stores that averaged 135,000 square feet.

Regardless of the size, Target’s new stores reflect their neighborhoods through decorative touches such as murals and localized assortments. The chain’s new store in Brooklyn, N.Y., includes a mural of two famed natives, native rapper The Notorious B.I.G. and singer and actress Aaliyah.

For dense city centers or college campuses, Target executed its smaller-format concept. It opened nine of these locations in 2023, ranging from Toomer’s Corner in Auburn, Ala. — a one-stop shop for local college students at just under 20,000 square feet — to three-story Brooklyn Kings Plaza in New York at just over 92,000 square feet.

Remodels

Target remodeled more than 160 existing stores across the country in 2023. The updates included adding more space for drive up and order pickup services, new fitting rooms and remodeled employees spaces. Full grocery was also added to some locations.

The number of in-store shops at Target also grew last year. In addition to refreshing or adding more than 80 in-store Starbucks Cafes in 2023, the company opened 40 Apple shops, 140 Ultra Beauty locations and 20 Disney Clubhouses.

In addition, to support its goal of net-zero emissions by 2040, the chain continued to add features such as natural refrigerants, electric vehicle charging and rooftop solar panels to existing and new stores.

“New stores, new services, new capabilities — none of these are possible without Team Target,” Target said in the post. “Whether providing an amazing shopping experience, staffing our fulfillment services or supporting the supply chain, we truly deliver the goods. And with more new locations and investments planned for 2024, the best is yet to come.”
