Shop 'n Save is offering cash back with Upside.

A mid-Atlantic grocery co-op chain is partnering with a cash back app.

Close to 80 independently-owned Shop ‘n Save locations in Western Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Ohio and West Virginia are teaming up with the Upside platform to offer incentivized, personalized promotions to Upside users to drive them to spend more of their grocery dollars at Shop ‘n Save.

Via Upside, Shop ‘n Save can target shoppers who visit stores sporadically or regularly but have not yet engaged with loyalty offerings. More than 30 million consumers have access to Upside promotions through its platform and its network of partner apps. Leveraging historical customer data, the company creates personalized cash back promotions.

To date, Upside says it has returned $600 million in cash to its users, generated $1.3 billion in profit for its retailer partners, and allocated 1% of its revenue to support sustainability initiatives.

Other notable Upside partnerships within the food category include enabling Instacart shoppers (Instacart’s term for workers who fulfill online customer orders at partner brick-and-mortar stores) to earn an increased savings of up to 30 cents per gallon cash back at thousands of participating gas stations nationwide. 

In addition, Upside directly integrates personalized fuel, restaurant and grocery offers into the DoorDash driver app, which digital banking start-up Payfare provides for DoorDash.

Outside of food, family-owned regional Northeast hardware retailer Aubuchon Hardware recently deployed Upside to provide personalized cash back promotions that adjust in real time.

Based in Pittsburgh, Shop ‘n Save operates more than 80 stores in Western Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Ohio and West Virginia.
